Italian Movies: Waiting For Call Me By Your Name 2

It’s official: the sequel to Call Me By Your Name will come out soon

During the last Academy Awards Ceremony, Luca Guadagnino had already explained his profound desire to produce the sequel to Call Me By Your Name, following the last chapter of André Aciman’s bestseller. His new project is still at a development phase, as he anticipated he would focus on it only after having completed his remake of Dario Argento’s horror “Suspiria”.

A new encounter!

The epilogue of the book shows the next part of Elio’s and Oliver’s lives, meaning that the storyline will continue after the dramatic separation of the two boys. Thus, Call Me By Your Name is not only a summer fling, as the two young lovers get together again in the future.

The acclaimed Italian director considers the first chapter as the meeting of two young lovers and, at the same time, Elio’s process of discovering himself and becoming an adult. On the contrary, the second part is more about a young man looking for his place in the world.

Some weeks ago, during the last Toronto International Film Festival, the co-star of the movie Armie Hammer, who was promoting his last drama named ‘Hotel Mumbai’, confirmed that it is only a matter of time until we can jump again into the sweetest and gentle love story of last year. The American actor showed considerable enthusiasm for coming back in the lovely atmosphere of the Italian set with Luca and his colleague and good friend Timothée Chalamet, breakthrough actor of 2017, currently promoting Amazon’s next production “Beautiful Boy” and the future Netflix’s “The King”.

More details: release date, plot, set

There’s no official release date yet, but it is said that the new adaptation may come out for 2020 and probably there won’t be the hand of James Ivory anymore. According to statements made by Aciman and Guadagnino about the work in progress, the movie will be set during the 90’s. This means five years later the original version of the book, which touched the issue of HIV epidemic outbreak in the second half of the 80’s.

Moreover, there will also be a fifteen years older Oliver married to a woman and father of children, with separation and regret as main themes. Last but not least, the picture may show Elio and Oliver all around the world, so the set won’t be exclusively the gorgeous Italian countryside of Crema, the city of Bergamo and the town of Sirmione on Lake Garda, as in the first chapter.

“Somewhere in northern Italy”

Luca’s deep purpose was to show another less-known part of Italy, different from the usual foreigner cliché coming from their Italian vacations. In fact, one of the most loved aspects of this coming-of-age soft romance is the revelation of an idyllic summertime in northern Italy: antique villas, gardens and lakes, swimming pools, small towns, teenagers parties and pure love. This unique and gorgeous set played a relevant role in creating a sort of small universe with long days and love affairs.

Let’s see what will be next!
